It's an amazing place Nikonians when you can get such good and wise advice from professionals and true experts. I am deeply grateful to all of you....
I know one thing - if I were to pick a NEF workflow from scratch it would not be Aperture 3.4, which does a fairly indifferent job of D600 NEF conversions - lots of contrast and detail but the default skin tones are not good - and does not support lens profiles for automatic corrections. It's not running well either despite upping RAM to 16gb, and I have to rebuild the database far too often.
Aperture 4 is long overdue, and a look at Apple's revenue analysis will tell you why... It is all rather a shame as there is much about Aperture to love.
I am now going to try Lightroom, but I am sure Photo Mechanic is excellent too, and the way it interacts with CNX2 sounds especially good. I'm not sure that PM/CNX2 is the right answer for me, especially as 30% of my shots are taken on an X100.
