Yes, I can confirm that the gridlines (and the AF points) are not meant to stay illuminated.

Depending on the state of Custom Setting a4 (and assuming you have Custom Setting d2 set to "On"), the lines will be illuminated briefly in red:

+ when you try to focus and the camera detects a dark background;
+ every time you try to focus;
+ never.

Either way, the illumination only happens for a second or so.
