Hi there,

The gridlines are not particularly thick, but I think the red flash that you are referring to is the "af point illumination" function.

This can be set to:

auto (focus point is highlighted in red when needed to contrast with background)
on - always on
off - erm off

Page 222 in the manual has more detail and it's menu item a4 if you want to explore

note: if you want the unused fx area to be greyed out when in dx mode, then you must set this option to "off"
