I am pleased for him, as the move is even more right for him. He shoots primarily film though this is changing and the D800 may become his primary camera.
I was about to take my Katz Eye screen out and mail it to him, a ghastly job I was dreading, when he told me his D300 was history following a long (and rather expensive) conversation in Grays Of Westminster in Pimlico. So the Katz Eye can stay where it is and I will sell (or just possibly keep for my children - depending on the price) the D300 with Katz Eye in situ.
Your friend has a wonderful new set up - the move from the D50 will be astonishing. I like your argument about the conservatism in moving from film to DX and back to FX, which is all about the lenses being compatible only upto a point.
I would only note that DX would never have been born had a FX sensor been put into the D1, whereas micro 4/3 and cameras like the Pro X/X100, the Sony NEX range and the new Sony and Nikon 1" sensors all have their arguments... I would have difficulty in advising an aspiring photographer to get into DX SLR photography with all those alternatives out there.
I am now outside the shop at 9.55 waiting for it to open.....
