Air blowers and anti-static brushes have been around as long as there has been image recording media like metal plates, glass plates, acetate film, etc. Most cameras did not have an issue with dust, but negatives, the recoding media, could accumulate dust and it had to be removed before printing. Now that the recording media is in the camera, that is where the dust accumulates.
