With my index finger on the shutter, I can easily cover the Nikon logo under the LCD with my thumb. ALL of these cameras are far too small for me and getting to the buttons with my eye in the viewfinder is a cruel hoax. For me, if I don't have a grip on it, I leave it at home as it's unusable except as a remote.
As for weight, that is simply not a consideration for me. All of my film cameras weighed far more than these units and it wasn't ever a problem.
Yes, the D800 is more comfortable, but for me it's only marginally better. The pro bodies are the only one's that actually "fit" and Nikon keeps putting it's best sensors in anything BUT those bodies. So I live with the limitations.
