Does the CA appear on all lenses? CA correction is for JPG files, not RAW NEF files but most software corrects it in post. It is a lens issue, usually wide open as you found.
If the 28-300 is too heavy, I am afraid you will not like many of the high quality FX lenses available since they all have high density, multiple group lenses inside that adds up to be hefty. Going FX normally involves a commitment in fine lenses and tripods, technique to get the image quality only it can provide. For more casual use, DX or smaller bridge cameras are pretty effective and a lot cheaper.
