Focal Plane mode does limit range, but if your subjects are not needing a great deal of flash reach to balance or overtake ambient(Hobby's complaint) you will not notice any problem and just shoot as fast of shutter as you want. I used FP flash at high speed for the bouquet toss at a daylight wedding 2 weeks ago and was able to significantly darken the the background with just one SB900 so I suspect the complaint was more about "potential" rather than actual problems.
