While it is not the reason I do it, I use the SD for backup, and so I never take it out of the camera. IF you do the same it solves the "losable" issue.

I'm not all that happy either, really, I would have preferred two identical slots of either type. Though it is a relatively minor deal (and I do wonder why people who pay $3000 for camera then agonize over $100 for a card). My guess is someone at Nikon said "if we give them both, then any customer will already have cards to use of one type or the other". The question is why didn't someone say "and then to make use of it that means almost 100% of them have to go buy the other type", instead they said "good idea".
