Don't need to physically shake them, just rotate them and listen for the rattle. Mine was so bad that you could hear it on video(I don't use it for video, but people were posting that you could hear it on the soundtrack, and sure enough, you can) Trouble is, the other one in my dealers stock was even worse along with a D800.
