You are so right. I went out shooting today. Beautiful weather, first real time out and about with it and especially in good weather. I have never had so many sharp properly exposed photos from any camera. Those who say you need a tripod with MLU to get a sharp photo probably doesn't know how to shoot properly handheld. Here is a full size (reduced) image and the next is a 100% crop. There is no sharpening, converted with ACR 6.7.
Here is another tighter crop. This one is sharpened a bit.
This is one of the main reasons I switched from my Canon to the D800. Being able to crop. i am excited just thinking about the things to come with this camera.
