and as Stan said any plug will disconnect the internal mic. and knowing this sometimes when I have been taking videos and the ambient noise is not helpful I had a jack that is not connected to anything that I just plug in to the socket and then no sound is recorded. I use that quite a bit in a variety of circumstances. (saves having to post process the sound track out - lazy of me).
