Mick - To be sure, there's noise at 3200 and above, and I don't try to suppress it completely in PP, as it seems to soften detail too much to me. Of course, noise shows where grain used to in Tri-X days -- out of focus and dark areas. My primary use is newspaper publication. The small weekly I shoot for has remarkable reproduction quality, and this well meets that need. I had similar, though slightly inferior results with the D700, and at lower ISOs, there's just really no comparison. The D800 wins hands down.
