I think many similar sorts problems occur when using utility software to transfer files from a camera to a hard drive. As well, utility file transfer software - especially Nikon Transfer - has got to be the absolute slowest method of transferring files from the camera to a hard drive or other storage device.
I think that the best and simplest way to transfer files is to use a fast, external card reader. SanDisk and Lexar both make excellent USB 2 and USB 3 card readers that take up little space when travelling and that turn an extremely lengthy file transfer process (when using Nikon Transfer) into a relatively quick and simple task.
IMO, buy a good card reader to save time and eliminate aggravation.
