Great to hear your views and I agree totally. I have taken a look at some other sites and must say that I already feel at home here and value all responses. I am certainly picking up much valuable information just from reading the exchange of views.
Yesterday I stumbled upon another site where a question had been posed by a person who indicated that he was relatively new to photography, and was seeking to upgrade to a D800 from his D90. He was asking a very similar question to mine, in his case if he buys a D800 could he use his existing lenses. His principal difficulty was confusion about DX and FX. It was only three quarters through the thread that someone answered that simple point, but all other respondants had called into question why someone with limited experience was even contemplating such an upgrade. Needless to say, I am happy to stay here at Nikonians - I do not think my blood pressure would stand the frustration of sites such as that!
In answer to your first post, it was an article in DSLR magazine that prompted my query - I subscribe to both the basic and advanced editions - when I took up photography again as a more serious hobby some two years ago, I decided that I would go back to absolute basics -as if I had never picked up a camera before and would relearn, avoiding bad habits, not taking for granted what I knew and trying to establish a sound technique - it was an eye-opener - I now feel I have a sound foundation on which to build my technique - using the basic magazine to ensure my foundation skills are sound and suggesting projects, and the advanced, to push my limits. Nikonians then allows me to pick up tips and ideas, and as I have found, there is no embarassment asking even the simplest of queries.
As for my current status - I am enjoying my D800 immensely; it is advancing my photography much more quickly than I could have imagined, and as for lenses - well, much more investigation is necessary, but I am being tempted by the 24mm - 120mm - F/4.0 as a stop-gap easy everyday carry lens - it is my birthday next month so that will be an excuse to buy!
Looking at the pics on Niokonians I am also beginning to think I need to organise a photo trip across the Atlantic - just got to convince my wife!
As a final point I am also enjoying using Google earth just to look at where the respondants to my questions hail from...!
