"AF-on"

I recently started using the AF-on Tecnique and unless I am missing something this Technique makes no sense when using a tripod and or remote release. I then set up a custom bank for hand-held with AF-on and custom bank B for tripod and remote release where the shutter button actuates the autofocus.

Is this what most do? Any reason for AF- on for other than hand held?
