I read through most of the comments, so I don't think this will be too redundant:

LR and PS use the Adobe Camera Raw converter which disregards most of the in-camera settings other than White Balance. I use both for most of my work.

But, I have recently adopted the modified workflow of using Nikon View as the front end, especially for my D800 images. It's free!

Here's why:

First, View applies all of your in-camera settings. So, even if you shoot in RAW + JPG, they both look (exactly?) the same in View. There are times I just save the full sized image as a TIF and be done with it. When you zoom in on an image, you get a pretty darned good idea if the image is sharp, even if I later choose to process the same file in LR or PS, or both.

Second, the preview of a D800 image is MUCH, MUCH faster in View than the preview in LR. This makes culling a shoot faster than in LR. I can't even begin to describe how much time this has saved me.

Once my daily shoot is culled down to just my keepers, I Import that folder into LR, where I add my metadata and copyright info, and add them to the catalog. I now do this same routine on my D4 images, for all the same reasons. Once they are in LR, I go ahead and apply the adjustments I want to add to my images, but I always have the option of re-opening the same RAW file in View if I feel it did a better job of the post processing than I got in LR or PS after adjusting all of the sliders.

The reason I post these comments in this thread is because I was not satisfied with my D800 RAW images when viewed at 100% in LR. They never seemed quite as sharp (as my D4 images). I even had another pro photographer copy a few random images from one of his folders to a CD so I could view his shots on my computer in LR. They didn't look particularly sharp to me either, but looked fine in View. Interestingly, he uses View primarily for his work. He raves at how sharp his D800 images are right out of the camera.

Going this route, there isn't much of a reason to shoot JPGs in a RAW + JPG scenario, other than having a smaller file size, but you can still save JPGs from the RAW files in View with all of the same settings applied.

I use the D800 for landscapes and slow moving wildlife scenes, but switch quickly to the D4 for faster moving wildlife opportunities. On the landscapes, as others have mentioned, I set the camera to 3 second Shutter Delay so I can still use the viewfinder for composing and focusing. I have also adopted the recommendations given on this forum of not shooting on a D800 over F/8. That helped me quite a bit.

Maybe some of this will help you.
