I have never fine tuned any of my lenses prior to getting the D800. I just figured a couple of my lenses were just poor copies. I also thought that maybe the Auto Focus of my D800 needed adjustment. So with the D800 I started to fine tune some of my worst performers to see if they could be tuned in. There were three lenses in particular that I thought the fine tuning was way off, the AF 135mm f2.0, the AF 85mm f1.4 and the AF 80-200mm f2.8 two ring model. I brought them in just fine. To see whether my D800 AF was off I started to test the same lenses on my D3X. I found the lenses needed nearly the same AF fine tuning. I then started fine tuning most of my lenses on both the D800 and the D3X. I deduced that the AF on both my bodies was fine and some lenses just needed to be tuned. I expanded my fine tuning to include the D700 and D300. I did not use any charts or other accessories but instead used static objects like my little stuffed animals.
Here's what I found so far.
