If your worried about battery reserves keep the grip on. If your looking to get the sharpest images out of the D800 while using a tripod. Get the L-Bracket for use with "out" the grip.

There is a small amount of flex or give between the camera body and grip. So mounting the L-bracket directly to the body eliminates that. Plus the keeping the physical location of the image sensor as close to the fixing point as possible, reduces the effects of other outside forces that act on the camera body and lens.

The D800 is known to be touchy on a tripod. I've seen it first hand. I too had to make the same decision as to which RRS L-bracket I should purchase for my D800e. Though I'd prefer to have the L-bracket that goes right on the grip & body, I decided to get the bracket for the body only, to help eliminate the problems that one can run into when using their camera on a tripod.
