The hood is the best protection for a lens. All filters degrade the image to some degree. I now rarely use one even though I have a complete collection. I am an Event Photographer who has taken millions of images over the years and have never scratched the end element on a lens.
My favorite lens is the AF-S Nikkor 28-300. I also have the 14-24, 17-35, 28-70, 70-200, and 80-400 I would rather have the 14-24 than the two primes.
