Sounds like the D800 is made for you.
My son had a similar experience with the D3 and I with the D4,

I would back up your rented D800 settings to the flash card and your computer.
You can then transfer them to your new D800.
I would also copy them down from the camera to paper.
It took me several weeks to dial my D800 in when I got it.
