Interesting! I clicked on the thumbnail image on the page and it displayed a full-res jpg in my browser (FireFox). What I saw in my browser is exactly what I posted in the message above. In order to do the crop, I right-clicked on the image (Windows, of course) and selectd "Copy Image". I then pasted that image into Photoshop and it looked just the way it did in the browser. Just went back to the site and did the same thing with the same results, so it's not a different image. The image you posted looks fine - none of the blue/gray mess I'm seeing on the original.
This time, I saved the jpg file directly to my desktop rather than opening it in the browser first, then opened the file in Photoshop and it looks fine that way.(That is, like your posted image above.) I can't open the NEF file in my version of PS but I can see it in Windows Photo Viewer and it looks bad there.
Either way, the photo comes into PS as an 8-bit file.
I guess I don't have a good explanation for this but thanks for pointing it out.
