D800s or any other Nikon DLSR do not have an auto off. After user configurable time outs the meter and rear display shut off and the camera goes into a "standby" mode. In this mode the cameras draw very little power, really not much more than when the power is turned off. I've accidentally left my D300 on in my bag for several days without significantly draining the battery. In my opinion, the biggest reason to turn the power off is to prevent any accidental activation of the meter or the rear LCD.
