txs Howard - I did find some percentage of missed shots with my D80 - (almost like unofficial bracketing - they all come out differently ) However, with the D800, things are much more consistent. No bracketing without using the actual bracketing setting... I shot some close ups again just now - the live view is very reluctant and does not focus at all on foreground close by subjects - I have to help is on by first doing non live view auto focus and only then does the live view "understand my needs", namely to focus on the foreground subject. What I was wondering, is if this is normal, because I don't want to approach Nikon and let their technicians open up my camera if unnecessary. I, for one, find it a huge problem, but if all the D800's are like this, I'll have to accept it.
