I know many people here tend to wait a few months when a new body is introduced to read expert assessments and allow any bugs to be worked out, but is this really necessary? I don’t need an expert evaluation to tell me this is the body I have been waiting for to upgrade my ageing D80, and most software bugs can be addressed with firmware upgrades. That leaves just hardware defects, which seems like a real long shot.
As you can probably tell I really want this body! When I bought my D80 six years ago I decided to upgrade it when practical ISO sensitivity improves by two stops, or five years, whichever is later. As a hand-holder I value shutter speed, especially with some of my slower glass, so shooting at ISOs of 1200+ will really enhance my enjoyment. I’m pretty confident the D7100 does the trick and I would like to have it in time for spring in the mountains.
So what are the chances of an early purchase turning into a disappointment? Will you be ordering now or waiting, and why?
