One easy way to understand it is to imagine 24 grapes evenly distributed on a small saucer (D7100). Now picture the same 24 grapes evenly distributed on a dinner plate (D600). There is a lot more space around the grapes on the bigger plate, therefore, less pixel density. I'm sure we have an engineer out there ready to jump in a give us a better answer... lol
