The EN-EL15 really doesn't weigh that much, so pulling the battery from the grip only gains just a wee savings on weight. Now if you are using one of the EN-EL15A type batteries that you see on eBay, those have a fairly substantial weight penalty to them.
Personally, I like the added weight when I'm shooting but, admittedly, its not a plus when it is in the bag. At least the D7000 with grip and extra battery is substantially lighter than the D1 it replaced so I can't really complain. And as some have already said, the weight seems to add a balance to the whole rig and aids in steadying during shooting.
