None of Nikon's AFS TC's will even mount on a non-AFS lens.

I would recommend getting the Kenko PRO 300 DG-X converter. It has nearly the same performance as the Nikon TC's. It's a higher performing TC than the MC-7 however I've never owned one. I have all the Nikon AFS models and the Kenko Pro 300's and have compared them many times. The Kenko is very good and because of it's recessed front element fits on most lenses you would consider using a TC on. You don't want to use them on the DX 18-xxx lenses even if they fit though.

edit: I've used the Kenko TC's on most of my manual focus Nikkors including the AI 300mm ED f4.5 and ED-IF 4.5.
