I have a small inverter that runs off the 12 V in the car. I use it for charging while traveling sometimes. I plug the Nikon charger into it.

But for the price of an inverter, you can almost buy another battery. I would budget the battery as part of my road trip expenses, or find some way to scrape up the price of the battery beforehand.

You are right, the flash does consume a lot of battery. But you may not need it so much in the daytime & outdoors.
