Hi Alan, The problem appears to be more common amongst the D700's than any other camera when you do a Google search of the problem. I would hate to think that I have to replace the hotshoe on a regular basis!
Clearly somethings amiss with this particular model.
A flash bracket could be good for when I'm photographing events where the flash doesn't come off the camera, but it would add to the already heavy kit. Having said that, I must admit it doesn't seem that long ago I was hauling around the Metz CT60 bracket/camera combination with the battery pack slung across my shoulder (who could forget that joyful experience)! I was hoping that we had progressed past that era.
I would be keen to hear if anyone with a D800 utilsing the SB900/SB910 is experiencing anything similar with misfiring now that it's been out there awhile.
