Gary, After using Nikon equipment for almost 50 years now, and knowing a little of Japanese culture, I am convinced this is a Japanese trait, most noticeable in Nikon engineers. Like a polite modesty-born secret pleasure of hidden goodies for those able to find them and therefore deserving.
I just discovered (thanks to a forums question)) that the SB-900 and SB-910 speedlights have one more 'eye' and two additional sensors than the SB-800. No written reference yet found by me, anywhere (manual or elsewhere), as to what these do, but I have the feeling they increase preciseness in WB calculations, for example, and surely for more items improvement.
