Hi Steve,

The D800 is between the D3 and the D700:
While the D800's buffer has over twice the overall capacitiy (in MB) of the D700, the image files are 2 1/2 - 3 times larger resulting in slightly less capacity (# of images) than the D700 and the same to slightly more capacity (# of images) depending on bit depth and compression than the D3 without the upgraded buffer.
