The D300/17-55 is a great combination but it is considerably lighter than the D700 and the 24-70mm. If you're concerned about weight, this is definitely something to take into account.
Not only is the D700 heavier than the D300, but you have to remember that one of the benefits of DX is smaller/lighter lenses... upgrading to an FX version 24-70mm will negate all of those advantages and then some.
