I know what you mean...I did a similar thing, adding a D200 after the D1H and D1x. It's a lower model in the lineup, but time makes up for some of that.
The D700 is the same as the D3 in the most important ways. But a lot less money. I don't see myself justifying the price of a D3 unless it gets a lot closer to that of the D700. This is all just thinking out loud right now...any purchase is like a year away.
