John,

I lay mine down on the left side especially with a short lens mounted. That way you don't have such an acute angle on the hood and it's easy to pick up again with your right hand. Having said that, I would not leave the camera sitting on the grip and hood points for a long period of time. I do leave my cameras l laying on a padded table laying their left side. I cover them with a cloth to keep the dust in check. I like being ready at all times.
