Check to see if you accidentally bumped the AF-C, AF-S , MF switch next to the lens bayonet just above the FX symbol at the left of the camera (your right as you look at the front of the camera).

Just checked my D700, it is labled C, S, M.
My optometrist did that accidentally, couldn't figure out why his AF-S lens stopped focusing, thought maybe the motor went out on his lens, ended up manually focusing it on his D200. The switch was just outside of the AF-S detent.

Try that and let us know.
