Thank you for the reference material.

It's curious that the chart at:
http://home.comcast.net/~nikond70/Investigations/Photographic_Dynamic_Range.htm

shows a decrease in dynamic range when the D3 is in DX mode, but even then it's better than the D300's dynamic range.

I wonder why a subset (DX) of the sensor's (FX) size would show a decrease?

And finally, I understand that 12-bit vs 14-bit has no impact on dynamic range. Instead, 14-bit offers more accuracy.
