Ink used in MK to PK and then PK to MK differs depending upon the printer model. Epson now lists both the amount of ink and the time to switch for some of their printes especially newer ones. Check it out.

As for clearing nozzle issues, some printers such as trhe 4900 and 7900 clean by nozzle (really ink) pairs vesus older printers that use all inks even if only one is deficient. Ditto for ink volume in cartridge levels and space in manintenance tank pre-requisits for cleaning applying to pairs versus all inks.
