I've seen that. My experience is that this is directly proportional to sensor size. It takes almost abusive sharpening to do it to a D3 file. A D2x is relatively immune, although heavy-handed sharpening will definitely be apparent. On P&S files (x10 and Nikon P6000 for sure), it's definitely something that needs moderation.
