Indeed that (only AF-S, not AF-C, when not in EXR). This does not make sense to me. But what I also discovered is that if you are in MF, the LCD can be switched off. This is totally illogical. Unless I am very, very much mistaken, there is absolutely no way to determine the validity of manual focus without using the LCD!
