Thanks for your insightful reply. I admit that I was really concerned about the menu and operating controls on the Oly when I saw it in the store. The big attraction to me of this camera is that it is small, much more capable than a P&S, and can produce quality images. It appears that my concerns may be unfounded, and if I get the camera and put some effort into mastering it, it will prove to do what I expect it to. My choice of lenses would include the 14-45 mm zoom, which got good reviews, and could the lens to leave on if I just have the camera along in case a good photo opportunity arises. Two other interesting lenses would be the ones you mentioned, and the rather expensive 12mm f2.0 four thirds lens. Now the problem is to find a black body somewhere, as this camera is in short supply with long waitng lists. I will also order a copy of the user manual.
