I have never seen a shattered carbon fiber tripod, but I have (unfortunately) seen several shattered carbon fiber fly rods. A friend of mine had one that looked like he was holding a bunch of ribbons after it exploded. Now, of course, I know a CF tripod is much sturdier, has more layers etc. than a fly rod, but my point is that carbon fiber does, by nature, shatter rather than dent.
After reading a lot of threads on the site, I recently bought an Induro tripod, and ended up going with alumininum (the AT214) but it was more because of the cost, $150 vs $400 for the CF equivalent. I am on a pretty tight budget. The weight difference was 1 lb.
