Yes CF, pound for pound, is stronger/stiffer. But, as Neil pointed out, the marginal advantage varies greatly with specific design and manufacturing techniques. Another popular CF tripod line is Feisol. The Feisol CT 3372 has 37mm legs and weighs 3.8lbs.
Good quality can be obtained in both carbon and aluminum, as well as other materials like wood and basalt. You don't have to pay a carbon premium to get quality. If weight is very important to you, then carbon is worth the price premium. If weight is not an issue, you can get an excellent aluminum tripod and save money.
Quality aside, a good CF tripod is a pleasure to own and use. If you purchase one, you won't regret it.
