I find I have to push the stop pin down with my finger.

Or, you can as you state, loosen the clamp up so you can lower the plate from above.

But using my finger works well. To remove, I loosen the clamp far enough for the plate to be lifted from above.

I like the PhotoClam shoes that have a push button on the side that lowers the stop pin in the plate.
