I am planning for an African Photo Safari next November and want to take a tripod for a few landscapes. I won't be using it for shooting the animals so am thinking I can get by with a much smaller tripod than I normally use. I normally use Gitzo series 3 and 5. I found the Gitzo GT1542T traveler's tripod which folds down to 17 inches and will fit in my Airport Security along with my clothes, chargers, and other photo miscellany as checked baggage.
I'll be taking my cameras and lenses in a Kiboko 30L as carry-on which will meet all requirements for smaller planes. Packed with 3 cameras, 200-400, 70-200, 24-120 and 3 tcs and my shoulderstock it weighs 38lbs.
I know the 1542 is much flimsier than the models I am used to but am soliciting advise as to whether or not it is doable. I am planning on pairing it with a Markins Q3 Traveler ballhead.
