I don't have experience with that setup, but one of the products you should consider is the Puffin Pad. It's very light so shipping should be reasonable. It also has a loop specifically designed for use on safari vehicles.

This is a new product that is getting a lot of positive feedback. I handled it earlier this week and met the owners/developers. It is a simple concept and you could probably make your own version with materials and tools.
