Thank you for the extremely detailed and articulate analysis of my tripod problems and the possible solutions and options to correct those problems. I'm sure that my entry-level tripod experience is not unlike many novice photographers and the information you have provided is invaluable to us.
The information regarding ballhead vs pan/tilt for repeatability was especially helpful. Having never used a ballhead before I have no idea what the capabilities are for that style of head. With so many members of this forum using ballheads, its easy for a new member to believe that a ballhead is the best for all applications. I could easily have spent a considerable amount of money on a top-tier ballhead only to find that it didn't really do what I wanted it to. A high-quality pan/tilt may in fact be more appropriate to my needs. Without your insight I never would have know that.
The information regarding proprietary quick-release plates vs industry-standard Arca-Swiss plates is also extremely valuable. The quick-release system affects your choice of head so you can't decide on a head without knowing your plate system preference. So the incremental upgrade decisions system-wise really have to be made from "top down" rather than from "ground up".
Perhaps in the end I may end up putting a $50 saddle on a $10 horse...but that's because I dream of the day that I'll own that $50 horse.
Thanks again for all of your help!
P.S. - Gianluca, thank you very much for starting this thread. The information has been very helpful. I apologize for inserting my own tripod needs into your post, but I hope that some of the answers to my questions were of value to you, too. Best of luck with your tripod upgrade!
