Thanks, Perrone. I will NEVER have a $10,000 piece of glass, and will likely never have a $5,000 camera - let alone have them strapped to a monopod. And, if I did ever get a top end camera and lens, I think I'll be able to afford to upgrade my support.
Seriously, though. Thanks for the recommendation. My budget is something under $200 for the whole setup. I am leaning toward a carbon fiber monopod, and mounting my camera to it without a head for football. Since I always shoot football horizontal, I have no real need for rotation. I actually get more tired hand holding for basketball, even with the tiny lenses, since you have the camera to your eye almost constantly throughout the game. In football, you only hold the camera up for 5-10 second intervals.
I want to be able to mount the camera for basketball on a monopod, rotated to vertical, and shortened so that I can shoot it kneeling or sitting on the floor. Maybe I'll just get the monopod alone for football season and make a decision on a head for basketball in December.
I really would like a QR, since it makes setup/clean-up much quicker. I'm a parent who shoot photos, so I don't get a lot of time to setup and breakdown, and I like to carry the camera with me at halftime, without carrying around the support.
