I would not recommend the P5 for the scenario you described. Obviously dedicated plates are the way to go in that case. I've not found a "one size fits all" solution. It is, however, a great "tool box" plate for less demanding usage and mine resides in my Leica M8.2 bag. With that body it works perfectly for any orientation.
