Many digital cameras have "pixel defect compensation" routines to map out bad pixels but they're not usually accessible to the end user. For example I heard of one case involving a D1x that developed a stuck pixel: it was sent in for repair and the details of the service showed that it hadn't had the CCD replaced - it had simply had the bad pixel mapped out.

The great thing here is that it appears Nikon may be making the routine to perform this process accessible to the end user - in the same manner that Olympus did with the E-10 and E-20.
